Freeware for today: uTorrent

With the rescent news  of BitTorrent buying uTorrent, I decided that it was the perfect program for my list of free/open source/beta applications.

uTorrent is the best torrent program for Windows out there currently, and this isn’t just my opinion. BitTorrent, the company that created the bit torrent protocol bought them for just that reason; uTorrent is the best.

In the past I have written several blog entries on how to fine tune your client for you connection.

So, why is uTorrent the best you ask? Simple. Great speeds, super light (uses very little system resources) and very easy to use/configure. No other client I have used has boasted better speeds or a lighter memory footprint.

If you use torrents and you don’t use uTorrent, or haven’t heard of it, go forth and download it now! It is greatness wrapped up in a tiny program.

  1. I kinda hate uTorrent. As a bittorrent user who wants to stay below the radar and/or download at a greater speed than my upload, I am quite displeased with the control over uTorrent. Sure, I can set my upload speed way down, but then my download speed suffers greatly as a result.

Sharing shouldn’t be mandatory. It should be my choice what I want to share as I’m downloading it and if the software -makes- me share and short-changes me, then I’m not going to use it.

That and bitcomet’s has a video preview function, so you know you’re getting real videos.

Otherwise, the speed is great and the size even better. It’s just a shame they have to force sharing on everyone. I encourage people to hack this software!

  2. hate to tell ya buddy, but bit comet is banned from many private trackers for the sole reason it doesn’t share properly. Bit Torrent (the protocol) was meant so that the more you share the more you will receive. The problem comes when you don’t configure your client properly.

And uTorrent is capable of having movie previews. You just need to tell it to download the bits in order, which may make it download slower.

Everyone wants their client to work for them at top speed on install, but thats not possible due to the fact everyone’s connection is different. uTorrent has some defaults, but the best results come from actually taking the time and tweaking it.

  3. If you use the search engine inside the software of utorrent, you will go to a bad site with many viruses. The site is sponsored by http://www.mininova.org. Please do not recommend anybody to use this software.

If you do not believe you can try it.

  4. I have tired it. I have been using it for almost a year now. And I haven’t gotten anything remotely close to a virus.
