Unexpect – In a flash aquarium

Filed under: music — bardicknowledge @ 7:10 pm

This album can be described in one word: Wow.

For those unfamiliar with the band, Unexpect is a Quebec prog metal band, sometimes even classified as Avant-Garde. The best want for me to describe their style is to have you think of a demented circus. Watch Mirror Mask for a better understanding or any of Tim Burtons films.

With traditional fiddle, keyboard, pounding drums, insane vocals and heart quickening bass and guitar, this album is everything prob metal should be. I have yet to hear any other band pull this off near as good as Unexpect does.

Now, this style of music will not appeal to everyone, so before you tear my review apart stop! Its an opinion. But if you like death, black and prog metal, this is at least worth your time to give a listen to.
So to give this a rating out of five I would have to give it a 4.5/5 just because it isn’t perfect. I feel a few songs on the album don’t match the over arching mood given by the other tracks, taking some of the wonder away.

Never the less, a wonderful disc. I recommend a listen!

  1. I’ve already experienced them in concert and I enjoyed them for the most part, so I’ll have to grab them from you.

On that note I need to rebuild my metal collection that got wiped the first time I had to formatt my computer. I’ve been missing it and you’ve got lots of it.

  2. That I have. I love metal.

Hopefully Unexpect will be making a return to Halifax since I find myself making a turn to more experimental and melodic metal.
