How to fix uTorrent speed problems

Filed under: internet, software, tech, tutorial — bardicknowledge @ 12:25 pm

**If you are looking for information on the new WebUI check out my new post on how to use it here**

I’ve noticed several people find my site looking for uTorrent help with speed issues, but are likely put of by my large guide to the whole program so this will be my compact guide to getting uTorrent to run at top speeds for your connection. Get the newest version of uTorrent here.

Before you start reading this, let it be known that torrents are a tricky business sometimes. The speeds aren’t always guaranteed and you won’t always max you connection cap out. It is just the way things are.
1)First thing is first. Do you have a router? If yes, follow along with port forwarding. If not jump to step 5.

2) Ensure you have you have static port for uTorrent. If this confuses you don’t worry. I will explain. Go Options->Preferences->Connection. Now do you see the first part where it says “port used for incoming connection”? Under it is the check box “radomize port each time uTorrent stats”.. Uncheck it and the uPnP box.

3)If you have a router you will want to port forward your connection. And do port forward you need a static IP so the router knows where to look. So, go here to read up on how to set a static IP. If you have more than one computer connected to your computer, make sure all the other pc’s have static IP’s.

4)Now that you have a static IP, time to port forward which is easy enough. Go here and select the type of router you have, and then you just need to select the software you want to forward with (uTorrent of course) so you will scroll to the “U’s” and select uTorrent. From there it will give you a step by step on how to port forward including the step 2 I already took you through.

5) Now, you have port forwarded.Next this is you use a little windows hack to allow you to make more connections to your peers, enabling faster downloads. Go here, download the patch and run it. DO NOT OPEN IT BEYOND 40! Doing so will only screw yourself over. Now you take advantage of opening more connections you need to tell uTorrent you did so.

6) Options->Preferences->Advanced->net.max_halfopen … Here you will want to change the number to no higher than 40. Play around until you find a number that works best for you. I use 40 myself, but some find lower numbers work better. This part will depend on your connection.

7) So, you have port forward (if you had a router), patched windows and told uTorrent to use that extra bit of room. Now, run the speed test. Try to select the preset that is closest to you. Now, download speeds now really matter a lot here when playing with the speed preferences, but upload does. The BT (bit torrent) is built, the more you share the more you get. But this leads to the problem, if you share too much if takes all your connection, share too little and you won’t get anything back.

So, get your average upload speed from the test and do 5-10% less than that. You won’t likely meet it every time you are uploading, but it will cap it if it does. If you find you are maxing your upload every time, increase it a little. If your downloads slow down, put it back down, if not, leave it or set it a little higher.

8) ONLY DOWNLOAD 1OR 2 FILES AT A TIME! You only have so much bandwidth, so realize you can try to download everything at once without feeling it.

9) So everything thing should be running fine. To test, go here and download the latest version.take note of the symbol in the lower status bar. If turns green after a few seconds everything is good. If it yellow or red you may have port forwarded wrong. If you didn’t port forward, your IPS may be blocking torrent traffic.

Also try several different ports if its not green. If this doesn’t work, check the uTorrent site for help.

I would like to thank the guys on the uTorrent forums for all the info.

  3. Regarding the number of half open connections hack in points 5 and 6 above:

You don’t get any more connections to your peers as stated in the above article – you just get to set up connections quicker. Its a common myth that this will speed up your connection, as its not going to allow any more connections to your peers – its the number of new connections your client will make per second, which is defaulted to 10 in windows and 8 in uTorrent.

The reason this limit was put in place by Microsoft was to stop worms connecting to too many computers at the same time – its dangerous for the entire Internet if too many people do this hack – I just hope you are all running virus protection before you mess up the whole internet!

    Comment by Mark Crosby — September 4, 2006 @ 9:36 am

  4. I’m aware that it was put in place to avoid the spreading of worms, but I would have anti-virus in place, and I have noticed a speed increase with that tip.

So, even though it is the number of connections per second, with torrents you would connection to 100 and disconnect from just as many in the span of seconds. This does help. Whether you choose to think so is up to you though.

    Thanks for the comment ^_^

  11. I know this forum is for utorrent but I just got bittorrent and have been searching the internet trying to find out how to improve my download rate. On my first downloaded I was getting about 64kb/s but I went to make another download then next day and was only getting about 2-3kb/s WHY??
I cant find the answer anywhere!!!
    Please help 🙂

    Comment by Charlie — October 12, 2006 @ 6:12 am

  12. It could be any number of things. Most likely the torrent you have downloaded on the second day was poorly seeded, or not seeded at all and you connected to a peer. Check that and if that doesn’t help come back with some more info, like your client settings, your connection speed, the torrent in question ( the number of seeds and peers). I would also suggest using uTorrent as your client 😛 I (apparently ) think it is the best out there currently and help you better if you use it.

  14. I’m not going to delete your comment because you are wrong. I just downloaded and scanned the package. It’s virus free. Also to boot I have been using for ages. It is just your anti-virus being over protective of anything that would change a system file. Chances are you are using Windows Firewall, which btw is a crappy firewall.
But like I said, since the file is changing a system file it appears to some A/V to be a trojan.

  15. Thanks man! this definitely helped. I went from downloading at about 10k/per second to 200k/per second and over! Definite increase. I didn’t realize my router was blocking uTorrent from working properly. This was very helpful, thanks again.

    Comment by sandy — November 24, 2006 @ 10:41 am

  25. Sk88 – You don’t have your uTorrent portforwarded correctly or your router can’t handle the incoming information properly. Check the uTorrent forums. They have some great tips and advice and almost any problem.

Sandy, is the connection symbol red, yellow or green? If not’s not green, check the port again, and your forwarding.

If that doesn’t do it, ensure you have the newest version and go through the option checks described above.

Another thing you check is to ensure uTorrent is being allowed by your firewall. Even if you told the program to allow uTorren to connect, go in and create a custome rule to allow it on the port you are forwarding.

    Comment by bardicknowledge — November 24, 2006 @ 11:10 am

  26. My connection symbol is green, download can up to 50KB+, run port testing show ‘OK’….i using win xp sp1, for win xp sp1 original already got window firewall, so is it in control panel – network connection choose properties select advanced & tick the internet connection firewall ..after that click on setting near the bottom right side..add my port number for TCP & UDP…doing like this already allow firewall through…. or can i uncheck the internet connection firewall..so the firewall direct turn off….the UdPnP is for what? not really understand..how to check in router..
& add utorrent firewall expedition is it unckeck it cause it for winxp sp2…

If i am do wrong pls help.

    Thanks for ur feedback.

  27. I don’t know if anyone can help, is there a way in utorrent to stop connecting to the slow seeders, 56k people.

I’m getting sick of the 2 and 3kb connections, can you somehow block these seeders.

Windows XP Pro SP2 (all updates)

Port is forwarded and allways shows green.

    Thanks.

So what do I do??? Open it up or not, because some people say it’s not a virus and that it works????

Please could someone give me a little advice

    Thanks

    Comment by Kinky Little Minx — January 5, 2007 @ 6:49 am

  29. It depends on your anti-virus. Some scanners think that it’s a virus because it changes a system file. But honestly, it isn’t. If you don’t believe me read the offical guideo n the utorrent forums and it will suggest the same thing.

    Comment by bardicknowledge — January 5, 2007 @ 2:38 pm

  30. The patch is not a virus .. antivirus companys put in it there virus lists because it mods your files ,but I am sure its not an virus as I have used it and am using it. My upload speeds and d/l have gotten much faster cause of this.

  31. Hey,
    just tried you suggestions.
problem is, my internet slows down completely when utorrent is running.
i think my peer connections may be set to high, but even when I lower it to 10, my internet browsing still goes very very slow. And it’s not just my comptuer. Other computers connected to the same router I’m connected on, also slow down.
    any thoughts?
    thanks,.

  32. HELP!!!!!!!!! recently everything was going fine, but all of a sudden my freaking utorrent starts downloading normal, then all of a sudden it goes down and limits to 30 kb/s!!!!!! its not a problem with my router or my ports. this happens in all the clients i’ve used. I dont know how to fix it!

    Comment by kmanslick — January 12, 2007 @ 9:22 pm

  33. mes, if you net is slowed down, it could very well be your routers inability to handle the bit torrent connection properly, or it could be that it isn’t be port forwarded properly. Check those again, and check on the uTorrent forums for any threads concerning your router model. If that doesn’t work try updating the firmware in your router.

Kmanslick, try going into your options ->bit torrent and turn outgoing protocol encryption to enabled and check all the other boxes in that menu. It would be that your ISP is shaping bt traffic on your network. Also, test if this cap is just effecting your torrents. If its effecting your whole internet you may have a virus/spyware or in one case I had, my ISP put a cap on my connection because my room mate had a virus.

But before you do that, are you trying the same torrent all the time or is on all your torrents? Check your upload/download settings.

You may want to try some advance settings so go here :

Setting up uTorrent for Optimum Performance

and try some of those options.

  44. Just to join the disussion about virus/no virus, the tool contains a trojan. And yes, I am aware that some virus proections might be overreacting becuase we are changing the TCPIP.SYS in a sysfolder, but that not the reason here.

It really contains a trojan, if you speak german, you can also read more about it here:
    http://forum.avira.de/thread.php?threadid=5284&threadview=1&hilight=&hilightuser=0&sid=5c186d3190fc3e0cf5874bcef2a4bc73

  45. whatever you can say, the patch has worked, still works and is recommended by the uTorrent makers.

Many people say it has a trojan because their scanner says so. But in reality it is just that it has all the traits of a trojan because of what it is meant to do.

I will try to send the file to nod or avg and have them check it out. I will try to find out for sure if is.

I am still connected to my router but there is no connection to the internet. Then after a couple minutes it jumps back up to the high downloading speeds. I have a linksys WRT-54G router and I have heard that maybe I am having this problem because it is a crappy router.

I would appreciate any help to fix this irrating problem..Thank you

  61. Brian: In your Linksys router under Applications
& Gaming theres another tab named DMZ. Enable it and put your computers IP in the box, most likely 192.168.1.101 or *.*.*.2. It will open your computer up to the internet (So you better have a good firewall, and an anti-virus.) It does help substantially though.

I have a Buffalow WRP router running straight out of the box (no forwarding etc) but I still get an average of 450 kbs download. my utorrent indicator is red (saying there is aparently a problem with my connection) I cant see one, makes no difference to me as I always get 400- 500 kbs down when there are enough seeds, work that one out!, I do not even have utorrent connection set up as UPnp either. LOL. so I wont be changing a thing. (-:

    Comment by andrew — May 19, 2007 @ 7:49 pm

  73. TG – You run the OO file and see what your top speeds are. If your on cable you are looking at 150kb + easily. I’m not a 10mbit line and can break 1mbit down with certain torrents.

lu – those speeds aren’t bad, especially if you are using a public tracker. I’m not a 10mbit line and I only get upload of 60 usually. I am going to research this and see if i can pump out more speeds so if I figure it out I will be back.

Andrew – Do you have a router? Are you sure you port forwarded properly? Do you have a static IP? Did you tell uTorrent only to use the port you forwarded?

  74. Good job, maybe you should check your links before you post them. Your great ‘patch’ site leads right to a virus download. … Maybe you should host the patch yourself, instead of directing users to go download a virus, eh? …

    Comment by Adam Weiler — June 2, 2007 @ 11:13 am

  75. LIke he said before in the earlier comments before you, the patch isn’t a virus. It changes system files around to set the number of connections to whatever you desire. Windows and whatever virus programs pick up on the change and label it as a virus. =) I must be really bored to read all those comments… Wish I had 1000kbs >_>

  78. clark – You’re router can’t handle all of the connections. Try lowering the number within uTorrent to 80 or so. That is for incoming and outgoing.

shawn – i never encountered that problem before and I honestly have no clue how one would fix it… email the maker… he may help.. or may not.

I hope everyone that posts from here on out will please include their emails. I know most people don’t come back to read my replies or I take a while to reply. I am busy. I do have something resembling a life.

  79. Hi there.
i’m having a problem with the ports. When i open them in the firewall, and then check if they’re open, the utorrent webpage tells me they’re not. As i have a dynamic IP, that maybe the cause of the problem. But i don’t know what to do. I can’t even start downloading a torrent. I’m confused.
    Please, help me.

    Bye

    Comment by Ivv — June 21, 2007 @ 7:37 pm

  80. Did you forward the ports on your router? And you will want make it a static IP for forwarding it on your router. What your router does is it is looking at an IP address to see if a port is open and if your IP doesn’t match the IP that as the port open it won’t work properly.

    Comment by bardicknowledge — June 21, 2007 @ 7:44 pm

  81. Hi – I switched to Ut from Azureus and have followed all instructions (port forwarding/settings etc) yet I am only getting 0.1-0.6 kbps!)

I have a Belkin – F5D7230-4 router, have forwarded to port 51309 = tests are all ok, and i have done all that is suggested above?! please help!

    Comment by cayman nick — June 23, 2007 @ 9:36 pm

  82. Dang, I finally got the GREEN light like after 10 hours of troubleshooting!!!!

    I have the following specs:

    Router -> Belkin F5D7633-4
    Firewall -> MCAFEE Firewall Plus
    Static ip (in windows) 192.128.1.136

What did I do. Well, I basically followed all the instructions as mentioned above, and they were very good! I created a static IP, 192.128.1.126 added the port 51309 on both my Router + Firewall MCAFEE. But it wouldn’t work.

I realized later that on my Belkinn Router, although I had created static ip addresses in windows, I forgot to “extend” the range from 192.128.1.136 to say 192.128.1.146… under the section :

“IP Pooling Starting Address” and “IP Pooling Ending Address ”

    Good luck to all.
my speed is flying now!!!400+ 🙂
    Now it works.

    Comment by CronikNL — June 30, 2007 @ 12:29 pm

  90. hi can you help me please? i’m using utorrent and it’s working fine, but i don’t know how to be specific about what i downloaded.

there’s a torrent with 10 seasons of a tv show and i only want to download 1 season, so i just check the boxes next to the episodes i want and press ok, but utorrent ignores me and wants to download all 10 seasons which would take forever!

(and i can’t find a torrent of the specific 1 season)

    Comment by custard — July 18, 2007 @ 6:48 am

  91. when you start a torrent all files are selected by default. So there are two ways to to this. One is before you start the torrent deselect all the seasons you don’t want to download. Make sure the check isn’t beside them. IF that won’t work, start the download and go to files, find the seasons you don’t want, select them right click and ignore. They won’t download.

    Comment by bardicknowledge — July 18, 2007 @ 7:03 am

  92. thanks, actually it is working.

the file just says it’s 30 gigs which is the size of all the seasons, but i checked like you said and it;s only downloading the ones i checked. thanks!

  95. I was just reading your post on that forums that links here 😛
Are you running windows firewall? If so shut it off. would suggest checking out the actual uTorrent forums. They have guides for most major firewalls somewhere so they can tell you how to get around it.

Also, since you aren’t portfowarding you don’t need a static port.

And… if you are using 1.7.2 you may be getting blocked by that tracker, though the light *should* still be green. Try the firewall first, and if no go drop to 1.6.1 or 1.6.2 and see if that works.

i don’t know about routers because i’m downloading torrents with a laptop.
    i’m downloading with 10~40kbps speed and i have a 11.0Mbps connection.
what should i do to make this download boost up to 100kbps??
i am connected to 32 seeders out of 80 and 145 peers out of 2116. i think this is a pretty healthy torrent.
i got rid of the firewall for utorrent as you said and did the patch to 100.
i’m downloading only one torrent now and seeding one.
    i use utorrent 1.6.1
could you tell me how to get my speeds above 100kbps just like everybody here did?

will this patch work for us, can we get a different one?
i’m pretty curious about this, got a bt home hub, (which for anyone interested behaves itself perfectly, although many have problems, i must be a lucky one going off all the grrr at the HH forums)and after forwarding a port and setting up my static ip address is happily downloading, but being greedy i want more :p

appreciate a comment on this, as all of us vista users would i guess

  157. bardicknowledge, re. “download the patch and run it. DO NOT OPEN IT BEYOND 40…”, my patch asks if I want 50 ?! I do understand that the utorrent settings must be changed after running the patch – should we just go ahead and run the patch at 50, or is there a way of changing the quantity in the patch, (what am I missing here??).
    Many thanks – H

  158. It doesnt work this way you moron… its only subject 2 ur connection speed and the seeders that connect with you….. Windows, which i’m sure all of you are using, will always restore the changes you try to bring about by the patches you built… so, be happy with ur speed and dont screw around with ur connection.. all the best
